We expect that Android 17 will be released later this month, but first, Google has a lot of updates for the Android device environment. As usual, some new features are limited to certain devices, and some require the use of Google apps. But if you don’t mind, you can get it automatic security from the increased risk of serious phone fraud.
According to Google, “fraud fraud” is one of many types of financial fraud. The FTC is targeting nearly $3 billion in losses from such scams by 2024, and improvements in AI voice tools will soon make the scams easier to pull off. Voice samples are getting so large that it is difficult to spot a fake caller even if the AI is imitating someone you talk to every day.
Google’s response is to expand a system it launched last month for financial verification calls. Now, the same thing will work with any of your contacts. Many of the more serious fakes involve spoofing a contact’s number, making the call appear legitimate when your phone is turned on. Victims of fraud are greeted with an accurate reproduction of the person’s voice spinning a thread that includes an urgent need for money.
Google’s fake phone detection service will be available on all phones running Android 12 or higher, but it requires you to have it installed. three Google apps installed: Google phone, Contactsand Google messages. Depending on your device, you may already have it. It’s an option introduced on Pixel and Motorola phones, and Samsung has now switched to Google Messages. Google claims that Phone by Google is the most used phone system, but that doesn’t seem to be accurate—Samsung has its own phone app, and it’s the biggest Android OEM by far.
