Real Madrid’s electoral commission has officially responded to presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme’s controversial statements in recent hours, where he questions the integrity of the electoral process and accuses the club’s management of giving current president Florentino Perez a clear advantage.
The Electoral Commission issued a lengthy statement confirming that the electoral register was not submitted to any of the competing lists, categorically denying claims that one campaign headquarters had member data and the other did not.
The Commission also emphasized that all candidates were informed of the official procedures for sending advertising and election materials to club members, and that this process takes place through Real Madrid itself and in accordance with previously established regulations, and not through any candidate to obtain a database of members.
The announcement came hours after Riquelme launched a scathing attack on Florentino Perez, accusing him of bailing out Barcelona during its financial crisis with a €400m loan. He also alleged that he helped cover up the Negrea case, which he said hurt Real Madrid in arbitration.
Riquelme’s criticism was not limited to this, as he complained about the use of the club’s official media to serve Perez’s election campaign, stressing that members of Real Madrid received election materials only referring to the current president, which he considered a violation of the principle of equal opportunities between candidates.
In an indirect response to these allegations, the Electoral Commission confirmed that any materials or documents received by members from any pre-election campaign were subject to applicable legal procedures, noting that all steps were taken in accordance with the regulations governing elections.
The commission also expressed its concern about Riquelme’s statements about the security of postal voting, stressing that it provides additional safeguards for transparency, including allowing each electoral roll to appoint certified observers to monitor the process of keeping votes in club premises.
The commission concluded its statement by emphasizing that it is committed to the accurate and complete impartiality of the electoral regulation, calling on all parties to respect its work and not to question the integrity of the electoral process without evidence.
