Thermacell is installed Life 2.0its next generation connected to Wi-Fi a smart mosquito repellent system. It features new materials and can cover larger areas, and Thermacell says its features can now prevent no-see-ums. But they are expensive and require professional installation.
Liv 2.0 uses the same setup and beginning Liv – a central location with its own cable management system the repellent metofluthrin – but it has new equipment. Prices start at around $1,746 for machines with three drives, six cosmetic packs, and coverage of up to 900 square feet. It’s more than double the size of the original, which started at $699 and took up about 945 square feet.
If you have more space, the Liv 2.0 costs $2,150 for a four-drive machine to $4,900 for a 10-drive machine. Thermacell says the largest 10-repeller setup, covering 3,000 square feet, is designed for commercial use, such as restaurants with outdoor seating. The price does not include the installation fee. You can still buy the original Liv plan off the shelf and install it yourself, but now it starts at $1,500.
Liv’s system uses propellants with replaceable capsules. This heats it up, creating a 20-foot safety zone. When built together, the unit expands – up to 3,000 square feet. There are no sprays or fumes and very little smell; and repellents are EPA-registeredand the company says it is safe for pets and children. When I reviewed the original planthe repellant was very effective at keeping the biting bugs at bay – but it wasn’t big enough to cover my entire quarter acre yard, and it still isn’t.
Upgrades with the Liv 2.0 include a new, redesigned accelerator that controls the amount of release, and the accelerator is now rated to prevent blind people. There is also a new branch system that allows flexible placement. Thermacell’s Adam Goess says the company has also revamped cloud connectivity and that these changes, combined with rising global commodity prices for IoT products, have contributed to higher prices.
Big difference between Liv and Thermacell’s battery– and butane energy transfer systems Liv draws directly from your home’s power supply and covers a larger area than standard devices, giving you greater, more controlled protection. Thanks to the Wi-Fi connection, the system can be controlled from your home. With the Liv + app, you can turn it on or off, set a schedule or timer, set up voice control with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, and get push notifications to remind you to turn it off to save energy (it can also be set to turn off). No registration is required, and Goess says Thermacell is committed to not putting the software behind a paywall.
Liv 2.0 is available now via Thermacell professional installers. It’s a very expensive solution to a very annoying problem, although Thermacell says the cost is about the same as hiring a company to pump your yard temporarily. If you’re considering it, consider getting enough mulch to cover your entire yard. In my experience, as soon as you step out of the zone, the bugs quickly return.
