Saudi Arabia national team star Saleh Al-Shehri has expressed his optimism that he will excel at the 2026 World Cup alongside Greece’s Giorgos Donis, Al-Akhdar’s new coach.
The delegation of the Saudi Arabian national team in national uniforms arrived in the American city of Houston, where they live, at dawn on Tuesday.Preparing to play two friendlies before the official campaign for the 2026 World Cup finals kicks off.
Al-Shehri said in his statements to Al-Arabiya TV channel after his arrival. “We have completed the first phase of preparatory work, and now we are starting the second phase, which is the most important.”
He added: “We have two friendly matches in which we are participating with full concentration and we are trying to take advantage of them before the first official game in order to enter the World Cup in an excellent way.”
On the other hand, Al Shehri refused to reveal the instructions of the Greek coach to the players, considering them to be secrets inside the camp.
“Dennis’ instructions are a secret in the camp and we hope to implement the technical ideas he asks for in the next two matches and capitalize on our mistakes to do well at the World Cup.”
He concluded. “We haven’t worked with the coach for a long time and I believe that step by step we will do well with him and hopefully we will honor the nation.”
Denis officially took over as coach of the Saudi Arabian national team last April, replacing France coach Herve Renard, who was sacked despite leading the Greens to a second successive World Cup finals.
The Saudi Arabian national team is in the eighth group of the final stage of the 2026 World Cup, alongside Spain, Uruguay and Cape Verde.
Al-Akhdar begin their tournament campaign against Uruguay on Tuesday, June 16, before taking on Spain on the 21st of the same month and finishing with Cape Verde on the 27th.
