Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the French Open quarter-finals with a straight sets win over Naomi Osaka in their fourth-round clash under the lights in Paris.
In the first women’s night-session match at Roland-Garros in three years, Osaka again took to the court in the gold, sequined bomber jacket that has become her trademark at the tournament, but she failed to find a spark with her tennis.
Sabalenka, who has now reached at least the quarter-finals in her last 14 Grand Slam appearances, set up a last-eight meeting with 25th seed Diana Schneider as she recovered from a shaky start to win 7-5 6-3.
“She’s a great player, she plays a super aggressive tennis,” Sabalenka said of Osaka. “I’m happy with the way I was able to put the pressure back on him. It’s amazing to be able to play a night session in front of you all.
“I am very happy with my performance. I am very happy with today’s performance.”
Osaka opened a 2-0 lead courtesy of a double fault by Sabalenka but the world number one immediately broke back and stole her opponent’s serve for a 6-5 lead, producing a powerful service return that the 16th seed could not control, her backhand failing to clear the net.
After holding tight for 3-3 in the second set, Sabalenka broke for 4-3, ending a long rally with a fine half volley.
Osaka, who was playing in the fourth round at Roland-Garros for the first time, didn’t have much left in the tank and lost the rest of the game, losing Sabalenka on her first match point as proceedings wrapped up in one hour and 27 minutes.
Snyder Madison Keys – the last American woman in contention – lost 6-3 3-6 6-0 to book a meeting with Sabalenka in the last eight.
Elsewhere, French hopes were dashed by Diane Parry’s 6-3 6-2 loss to the 114th-ranked Polish player. Maja Cwalinska.
