Diaz chooses the Atlas Lions… by heart, not by calculation
“I feel 100 percent Spanish and 100 percent Moroccan.” With these words that shocked the football community in the spring of 2024, Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz announced a decision that changed the balance of power in the Moroccan national team forever. This choice was not just a fleeting football decision, but rather the culmination of a long struggle between the country of the cradle and the country of the roots, between an ambitious sporting project and years of neglect.
On August 3, 1999, Ibrahim Diaz was born in Malaga, Spain to a Moroccan father named Sofia Abdelkader, who hails from a rural Moroccan family from the city of Nador, and a Spanish mother, Patricia Diaz.
From that day on, this child, the eldest of five siblings, carried two geographies in his blood and two witnesses to that equation in his name: from his father, “Ibrahim”, from his mother, “Diaz”. At that time, no one would have imagined that this complex name would one day become the focus of a discussion, in which the Spanish and Moroccan press and some politicians would participate. Ibrahim himself, while enjoying the streets of Málaga, did not know that one day he would be faced with a choice between two flags that he loved equally.

A boy they called Messi Malaga
Brahim Diaz was nicknamed “Messi of Malaga” from the age of six when the neighborhood kids noticed his exceptional dribbling and ball control skills. The family moved from the Moroccan countryside to Melilla and then Malaga on the Costa del Sol, and football remained at home. From a father who failed to fulfill his dream of playing professionally, the torch was passed to a son who seemed born to complete it.
Ibrahim grew up in an environment where the two identities were not in conflict. The father is Moroccan by roots and memory, the mother is Spanish by land and language. There are two voices in the house and two places in the heart.
Pep Guardiola was so impressed with him that he offered to tour Camp Nou with Lionel Messi himself when he was Barcelona manager in an attempt to convince him to join the Catalans. But the sixteen-year-old boy chose a different path.
In 2015, Ibrahim moved to the Manchester City academy for 200,000 pounds. He left his childhood playgrounds, city and family behind and set out alone for cold Manchester. A whole new world lay before him, but he carried with him something that would not stay; roots that spread across both countries.
The Spanish dream…the Moroccan moves at the right time
Ibrahim Diaz didn’t hesitate at the start of his international career as he represented Spain from under-17s to under-21s before breaking into the first team.
The big moment came in June 2021 when the Spanish national team was forced to include Olympic players in a friendly against Lithuania due to the coronavirus in the camp, so Ibrahim got his first chance in the first team of La La Roja and scored in a 4-0 win.
But international law was on his side. the match was a friendly and he was entitled to change his international affiliation. After that night, no one from the Spanish Federation contacted him. Head coach Luis de la Fuente did not sit with him.
No letter was sent to him, which would confirm that he is in the plans of the national team. The Spanish federation was widely criticized for not calling Brahim Diaz and neglecting to contact him personally to confirm his commitment. On the other hand, Morocco was moving in a completely different way.

Morocco knocks on the door five times
The Moroccan Football Federation has been trying to convince Ibrahim to represent Morocco since he was a teenager. This was not just a passing interest, but a long-term project of persuasion and persuasion. Then came Walid Al-Ragraqi.
Regraghi said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS. “I visited him very often. I went to see him for the first time in Milan. It was a good match. The doors weren’t locked and I realized it was a very difficult decision. He liked that we respected the need for time to think about the project. He also appreciated the love we showed him.”
During the 2023-24 season alone, Regraghi visited Brahimi five times. Five visits in one season. Insistence is like the pursuit of talent by a coach who believes deeply in it.
Regraghi added: “It was not only about securing an important role for him, but also giving him time to adapt to a new team, a new culture, a player who was born in Spain and has not visited Morocco much.”
Here’s the real difference. Spain gave Ibrahim a passing chance and kept quiet. Morocco gave him something more valuable than a call: love that takes time, with a clear plan.
“He gave us his word when he was still playing at Milan and he didn’t lie. He fulfilled his obligation when the time came. He chose to play in Morocco at a difficult time for him. We have to say bravo to him. He will win the hearts of Moroccans.

A decision made with the heart, not calculations
Shortly after the decision, Ibrahim sat down with media personality Jorge Valdano on Universo Valdano to explain everything. He said sincerely. “I feel 100% Spanish and 100% Moroccan. I grew up in Spain, but my roots are Moroccan.” He made no secret of his influence on Morocco’s journey to the 2022 World Cup as the Atlas Lions defeated Spain.
He confidently continued. “I have always decided with my heart, and this time too. The project that Morocco showed me seems very good to me.”
In response to the Spanish coach’s negative statements, he said his famous sentence: “I have never put pressure to play for Spain and I will not, I speak on the pitch, you accumulate advantages there.”
Behind the scenes, the family was fully supportive. His grandmother said. “He is the son of his father and mother, and he could have chosen any of the chosen.”
“My daughter (the player’s mother) informed me of the decision and I fully support her. I will move to Morocco to attend all his games.”
Debut: “Very Happy”
On March 23, 2024, Diaz wore the Atlas Black jersey for the first time against Angola. He played 87 minutes, had a great performance and came close to scoring twice. After the meeting, he commented: “I am very happy. I got a lot of love. I’m proud because I felt much better on the pitch and it was a good debut. My teammates were looking for me a lot and passed the ball to me. I’m happy because I felt love.”
He did not wait long, on September 7, 2024, in a match against Gabon, Diaz scored his first international goal for Morocco. He capitalized on a rebound from the Gabon keeper to secure a 3-1 win. This goal was the result of just 5 matches, after he had previously scored twice against Zambia and Congo.

African nations 2025.. the undisputed star and one wound
At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Diaz was the undisputed star, according to The Athletic, as the tournament was a turning point for him, and he won the Alcan top scorer award with five goals.
But in all that one wound remained in his heart. In the final match against Senegal, Diaz missed the penalty kick. Then the crowning dreams collapsed, and Diaz collapsed with them.
But in a scene outside the green rectangle, Ibrahim picked up the phone and wrote a heartfelt message. “My heart aches…I’ve been dreaming of this title because of all the love you’ve given me. I failed yesterday and I take full responsibility and I apologize from the bottom of my heart. It will be difficult for me to get up, but I will try, who believes in me, not for my love. Morocco”.
In those words, Moroccans saw not a defeated player, but a hero who bravely stood up to take responsibility, and the title was then returned to Morocco by CAF decision, pending its confirmation by the cup final decision.
In general, the numbers speak for him so far. Diaz has scored 13 goals in 24 games for the Lions so far, proving to be one of the mainstays.
