It’s a shame there isn’t enough time to cover all the exciting science stories we come across. So every month, we highlight a few of the best stories that were about to fall through the cracks. May’s list includes the discovery of potential pre-mining sites in the Pyrenees; a new type of blue octopus; why cats seem to prefer silver grape to catnip; and why political conflict can act as a phase shift, among other well-known issues.

Word: IPHES-SEARCH
At the top of the eastern Pyrenees is a prehistoric cave, which was excavated between 2021 and 2023. Based on the analysis of the artifacts found at the site, a team of Spanish archaeologists believes that this could be an ancient copper smelting site, inhabited more frequently than previously thought. The researchers reported their first findings in a paper published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology.
