Two-time US Open semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliasime used his experience to overcome Alejandro Tabillo 6-3 7-5 6-1.
In theory, the Chilean Tablio should have been the new contender, having spent six hours less on court last week after a walkover in the second round.
Canada’s Auger-Aliasime started strongly, however, going 3-1 down before holding serve for the rest of the opening set.
Tabilo had previously been through in the third round by a slam but stepped up in the second round.
The 28-year-old, who celebrates his birthday on Tuesday, played hard from the start and was soon in the game as he looked to finish 5-4.
But Auger-Alissime stepped up to take a 6-5 lead and finished the set to take complete control.
Tabilo faltered in the third and broke three times.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to make it this far since I was 12 or 13,” Auger-Aliasime said.
“I am a French-speaking person – I can say that I am very, very happy to have your support and I hope to have your support until the end.”
