Florida sues OpenAI, Sam Altman after multiple murders related to ChatGPT

Altman is accused of making ChatGPT insecure

The lawsuit joins previous lawsuits accusing Altman of using AI systems without regard for user safety.

In his complaint, Uthmeier recalled how Altman told attendees at TED2025 that currently “the risk is low” for OpenAI to test its products on real users, which he says is the only way to replicate it.

“But the demonstrations are not limited,” Uthmeier said. “Floridians – including our vulnerable children – have lost money, suffered emotional trauma, lost consciousness, and been harmed by this fraudulent, illegal, and dangerous behavior.

In a Press releaseUthmeier said that in fast things such as ChatGPT example 4o sale, OpenAI “ignored internal and external safety warnings, put children at grave risk, and allowed dangerous drugs to reach millions of Floridians.”

Likewise, the complaint said Altman should be “liable for the harm he caused to Floridians as a result of his reckless and willful conduct as the founder and CEO of OpenAI, including his reckless disregard for the dangers to public life as a result of his company’s conduct.”

In the event of a loss, OpenAI could face pressure to implement countermeasures such as free ChatGPT accounts to protect children, close conversations that discuss violence and suicide, and remove content that the government says fraudulently makes ChatGPT feel like talking to a person.

Without more parental control, the government may push for a ban on youth access to ChatGPT.

“ChatGPT is not safe for youth in Florida to use; its use can lead to self-harm, cognitive impairment, and behavioral addictions,” the complaint said.

At a press conference shown on X, Uthmeier vowed to work with other countries that want to protect children to respond to OpenAI and answer questions from the media. When asked if the state plans to go after all AI companies—not OpenAI—Uthmeier said that Florida is “definitely” looking at other platforms, but “ChatGPT seems to be very offensive,” and Altman is “in the middle” of pushing things that are dangerous to children.

“Get ready for a fight, and there’s nothing more important than this right now,” Uthmeier said.
