Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said he expected to win more trophies during his time at the Red Devils, but expressed optimism about the club’s future under Michael Carrick.
Fernandes, who was named Premier League Player of the Year in May, won – He won the FA Cup and League Cup while at Old Trafford.
“Obviously, I wanted to win more,” Fernandez told ESPN. “It wasn’t quite what I expected for myself and the club.”
“But I had a lot of good times. We managed to get to a few finals, some we won, others we didn’t, but my aim has always been to win the biggest competitions and the Premier League is part of that. This dream still haunts me and I hope to achieve it.”
An excellent second half of the season saw United finish third, meaning they will play in the Champions League next season for the first time since 2023-24.
Fernandez commented. “Of course, being in the Champions League is the most important tournament, let’s say it’s the competition in which you can play against the most important teams in the world, Europe.”
“This is something I want to do and I want to be at this level to play against the best and show that I can be at their level.”
Much of this improvement in form can be attributed to Carrick, who joined as caretaker manager following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in January and has won 12 of the 16 games he has taken charge of, having signed a permanent deal with the club in May.
Bruno continued. “I think Carrick brought a lot of positive energy to the team. He was trying to be very positive because we were obviously in a coaching transition, which is always difficult for a team.”
He continued. “Carrick tried to be positive and it’s clear that he brought new ideas and a different game, which was also important for some players to find a way to become champions again. It was good, and clearly the results prove it too. We hope to continue to do so.”
