The French tennis federation has imposed a record financial fine on Paraguayan player Dani Vallejo after he made comments deemed offensive to women about Brazilian umpire Ana Carvalho’s chair during their Roland Garros second round match against Moise Kouame.
Vallejo will have to pay a fine of 65,000 euros, which is the largest financial penalty applied to a player in the history of the French Open.
The amount will be deducted from the total financial reward that the player received for reaching the second round of the tournament, which was €130,000, meaning that approximately half of his reward will be deducted.
Although the player later apologised, stressing that his statements had been taken out of their true context, this was not enough to reduce the penalty or its value.
Vallejo, ranked 71st in the world, secured 130 thousand euros after passing the first rounds of the French Open Championship.
According to the report, Roland Garros tournament director Amelie Mauresmo took a firm stance on the incident, confirming in a clear message the tournament management’s refusal to repeat such statements at the “Bois de Boulogne” stadiums, where the competitions are held.
