The coach of the Panama team, the Spanish Tomas Christiansen, has confirmed that he is not afraid of facing the big boys at the 2026 World Cup.
Panama’s national team is in a difficult group at the World Cup, which includes Croatia, England and Ghana.
Christiansen led Panama to the World Cup for the second time in its history, defeating the United States three times and reaching the Gold Cup final in 2023.
Christiansen said in an interview with AS newspaper: “We are in a difficult group, but no one will surpass us in enthusiasm and ambition.”
He added: “Our goal is first of all to earn the first point in Panama’s history at the World Cup, and maybe more.”
He commented on the ambitions of the World Cup. “Why don’t we try to be like Morocco at the 2022 World Cup when the Atlas Lions finished fourth?”
He emphasized. “We have enthusiasm and ambition, and we will try with everything to write a new history for Panama at the World Cup.”
He concluded. “Football in Panama has developed a lot in recent years, whether in terms of results, infrastructure or talent.”
It is noteworthy that the Panama team lost 2-6 to Brazil in a friendly match in the “Maracana” stadium as part of the preparation for the World Cup.
