This fall, Nvidia will become a consumer PC manufacturer like Intel, AMD, Apple, and Qualcomm, putting a complete computing device – not just graphics – inside laptops and small PCs. After Many months are coming outfinally announcing the RTX Spark, the first in a family of chips that will meet or beat the thinnest and lightest Windows machines, it says.
“This is the best PC device ever made,” says Nvidia product management chief Mark Aevermann — without sharing details or a chart to back it up.
The RTX Spark is the same GB10 chip it is in DGX SparkThe “supercomputer AI” that Nvidia released last year, is now a family of chips instead of just one. This version appears to be equivalent to 20 CPU cores, 6,144 GPU cores and 128GB of LPDDR5X memory.
But Nvidia says there will be smaller models later, aiming for lower prices, and with 16GB of RAM.
Like Apple’s and Qualcomm’s chips, this Nvidia chip is Arm-sourced silicon, meaning that Windows software made by Intel and AMD’s x86 processors must be overclocked to run. This can mean less performance. But Microsoft has now spent many years acquiring Windows and its Prism emulator Ready Qualcomm and now Nvidia chips, and Nvidia says its graphics and AI chops will take the idea more than ever.
With the power of the RTX Spark, Nvidia boasts, you can render a 90GB 3D image, edit a 12K video, or play in the most immersive way. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at a smooth 100fps at 1440p resolution – all in a 14mm thick laptop with no power cord attached.
And up to 128GB of compatible memory, built with the old version of AMD Strix Halo componentsthe RTX Spark laptop or laptop can also have 120-billion-parameter AI, which Microsoft seems to be interested in for Windows. At Microsoft’s Build conference this week, it will show “new Windows security and core tools” that, along with Nvidia’s OpenShell runtime, “allow agents to run more securely and under user control.”
Nvidia says this adds “a new computing paradigm where AI is UX” and that “users no longer need to know complex UIs” because you just talk to your PC instead of having to use a mouse and keyboard.
Nvidia said that, for example, an esports player can have their PC turn off the lights, mute the microphone, and change the broadcast channel when they want to leave and eat dinner. A designer can use Adobe to convert a sketch into a complete image, create a 3D image, and then create an AI video on demand. A developer can manage their GitHub project and automatically fix QA issues, an AI assistant takes over a laptop keyboard and a mouse pointer to perform “repetitive and tedious” tasks.
Nvidia says that with RTX Spark’s AI chops, your data stays private and you won’t be burning tokens to do AI stuff.
I can’t believe Nvidia got involved Star Trek computer right now, but it seems like the company has more the friends they have. Almost all laptop vendors are accounted for, with eight laptops already confirmed for this fall:
One of them is from Microsoft, which is putting Nvidia RTX Spark in a new laptop that Surface boss Andrew Hill tells us is “the most powerful thing we’ve ever made.” It’s called the Surface Laptop Ultra:
That machine is obviously just the beginning. Aevermann says Nvidia’s partners are already working on more than 30 laptops and more than 10 desktops, with Acer, Asus, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, MSI, and Lenovo all participating.
“RTX Spark will be a family of products that will break even more expensive prices,” Aevermann promises. “The overall market opportunity we see is enormous.”
And between the efforts of Microsoft and Nvidia, many Windows developers also have Arm.
The company says that “Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Maxon Cinema4D, Maxon Redshift, Topaz Photo, CapCut, Cubase, Bitwig Studio, Affinity by Canva and more are powered by Arm today, as are the audio, video, MIDI, and control they need.”
Adobe is on board, and special optimization for Premiere and Photoshop which takes advantage of the new Nvidia chip.
Although the game is anti-cheat that thumbed their noses at Linux and Steam Deck they now support Windows on Arm, too. Microsoft notes that Riot Games is now bringing all of this League of Legends and Appreciation for Windows on Arm. Krafton delivers PUBG wallpapersand Nvidia tells us that it is working with many developers who use Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye and Denuvo. (Epic is Fortnite it already came to Windows on Arm last November after last March’s announcement.)
Aevermann says that “all the top games will run on RTX Spark and provide a great experience.” It’s a beautiful place to meet!
Here are some other developers that Nvidia is said to be working with:
There are many open questions, of course. Neither Nvidia nor Microsoft have given us a clear idea of how much these computers will cost, except that the first group this fall is “looking at the best prices in the market.”
As for “all-day battery life,” Aevermann would only say that “we should expect it to be better than anything you’ve seen on an RTX laptop” and that “you won’t need a charger” if you’re not pushing heavy workloads. The chip goes down to “low, low power” and goes up to 80 watts, he says. This means that they can drain large laptop batteries in about an hour after they are fully charged.
At work, Nvidia did not have a single figure or chart to share, and Aevermann would not answer questions about how the RTX Spark family stacks up to chips from Intel, AMD, Apple, and Qualcomm, saying that Nvidia will have more to share near the launch. But he says that depending on the program, it has the power of the RTX 5070 mobile GPU, and that we should expect the CPU part “to compete with anything else in the Windows space.”
Nvidia can no longer say whether TSMC 3 chips in partnership with MediaTek, are made in the US or abroad. There are no comments.
Nvidia also would not comment on whether it plans to offer Linux driver support for the RTX Spark, as it is targeting Windows. It wouldn’t say anything about putting the Spark into gaming hands, as AMD did with its powerful Strix Halo.
But it answered the question that no, RTX Spark will not be integrated with additional GPUs – which would limit its capabilities on desktops beyond small ones, as well. The Apple Mac Pro was limited where Arm’s smaller chips broke compatibility with popular GPUs.
It probably doesn’t matter that Nvidia isn’t sharing any evidence to back up its claims. Back in 2020, Apple has not shared any evidence when he announced Apple Silicon. But when the M1 arrived boosted our idea of laptop performance overnight.
