Today the first witness was sworn in Musk v. Altman: Elon Musk. I was surprised by how they looked.
This is not the first time Musk has been seen in court. In the time of his destruction, he lit a charm and the jury answered finding him not guilty. Today he seemed unprepared. The only times they show real movies are when they were bragging about what he did at OpenAI.
Direct observation is a method of telling a story through questions; it is important to make the story clear. In the suit that accuses Sam Altman of straying from the OpenAI project, Musk spent a lot of time talking about himself, explaining his background, and pointing out the various businesses he’s created that have nothing to do with OpenAI.
“I came up with the idea, the name, I hired the right people. I taught them everything I know, and I provided all the start-up money. Other than that, nothing.”
For example, he told jurors that he worked between “80 and 100 hours a week,” which is why he worked so much. I don’t know if his tendency to write a lot count as part of the work week. I believe security is asking.
We got to OpenAI, where Musk introduced himself as a pilot. He has been obsessed with AI since childhood, and who saw the need to stop Google from creating it. He testified that he was involved in AI defense because he had a conversation with Google’s Larry Page and asked, “What if AI wipes out all humans?” The page was not changed – as he thought, as long as the AI didn’t end, things were fine. “I said, ‘That’s crazy,’ and he called me an animist for being a humanist.” Thus OpenAI, owned by Musk, was born especially so that Google doesn’t have too much power in AI. Little one! Musk also said that after writing Ilya Sutskever, who was a research scientist at Google, to OpenAI that “Larry Page refused to talk to me again.”
What did Musk do for OpenAI? “I came up with the idea, the name, I hired the right people. I taught them everything I know, and I provided all the start-up money. Other than that, nothing.” He paused and laughed, and one or two people laughed happily. But most of the court was silent. I thought he sounded sarcastic. “I could have started it as a profit and I chose not to,” Musk said.
It’s hard to argue against an argument you’re expecting without making one yourself
I wonder how many judges are following this. We quickly went through many ideas, including “artistic wisdom,” an imaginary thing that many AI researchers still fear. Musk described this as when a computer is “as smart as a human, smarter than a human.” (Great language is not the same as wisdomand AGI has been explained below for some time. But whatever! This case is not for that!)
At one point, Musk was asked to reveal the identity of former OpenAI member Shivon Zilis. “Shivon was, um, my chief of staff and, uh, you know,” Musk said. One person in the house – who probably knows that Zilis is the mother of Musk’s few children – laughed out loud. But the jury looked surprised.
In the discussion about how to make OpenAI more money that would need to be accounted for, there was indeed a discussion of OpenAI’s for-profit arm with Musk. The trick here, I think, was to make it clear that Musk’s goals were very different from the benefits that actually happened. (It’s true! He didn’t get 55 percent of the equity in it, as it is possible the cup of the table said that he should.) All this seemed very beautiful, and we were shaken by discussing what, in Musk’s opinion, the fair division between founders and investors would be; It is difficult to preempt the conflict you are expecting without creating it yourself.
This is also a puzzle to the main point: Did OpenAI deliver on its word and trick Musk into giving to charity? I accepted a way to make a profit but not THE one to make a profit it is not a strong argument.
We’ll be back with more of Musk’s testimony and questions. If there is a clear story from the defense, then the case is over and done with shouting. I’ve seen strong performances from Musk in the stands before. Today it seemed that he did not call, maybe he is complaining about the case because he knows that he is wasting his time.
