Morocco’s rival suffers a painful blow ahead of the World Cup

A ‘knee’ gives Manchester United’s promising prospect the chance of a lifetime

Scotland have been dealt a blow just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup after the Scottish Football Association announced that midfielder Billy Gilmour had been left out of the tournament’s final squad due to injury.

Gilmour suffered the knee injury during Scotland’s friendly against Curacao on Saturday night as part of the teams’ World Cup preparations.

The Scotland team competing with Morocco in Group C won a 4-1 victory against Curaçao yesterday, Saturday.

The Scottish Football Association said in an official statement: “We are sorry to announce that Billy Gilmour’s knee injury sustained during the Curacao match will prevent him from participating in the 2026 World Cup.”

“All of Scotland wish Billy a speedy recovery as he returns to his club Napoli to begin his rehabilitation program.”

The Scottish FA have also confirmed the call-up of Tyler Fletcher to make up for Gilmour’s absence as the Manchester United youngster joins the squad for the tournament.

Fletcher is 19 years old and plays for Manchester United’s under-21 team. He also participated in two matches with the first team last season, against “Tottenham” and “Brighton”.

It is noteworthy that the Scottish national team is in the third group of the 2026 World Cup with the selections of Morocco, Brazil and Haiti.
