Find out about the 2026-2027 Champions League qualified teams, their classification and tournament system
Football fans around the world are experiencing a state of passion and anticipation that coincides with the approach of the launch of a promising version of the world’s strongest and most prestigious club competition, the European Champions League.
All the major powers of the old continent are looking to have a strong presence in the 2026-2027 Champions League, driven by the huge financial prizes awarded by UEFA, in addition to the increased enthusiasm imposed by the new qualification mechanism, which has led to fiery and entertaining clashes at various stages of the tournament.
For the third consecutive season, UEFA continues to implement its new strategy, a structure that has doubled the number of strong fixtures and helped to open new horizons of competition, transcending the monotony of the classic group stage after the real transition to a unified league system.
The 2026-2027 Champions League will feature 36 clubs as the Continental Confederation adopts precise seat allocation criteria, ensuring equal opportunities and securing a place for the most popular teams in their domestic leagues.
In the following lines, we will review the 2026-2027 European Champions League start date for you.
– According to normal data, 32 teams are qualified. According to the classification of European leagues: (champion 1-10), (runner-up 1-6), (third and fourth from 1-4), 6 places in the qualifying round, Champions League champion, Europa League champion).
– 4 additional places are determined by the following criteria:
– One seat For the third-ranked club in the country, it is the fifth on the continent.
– One seat For a club crowned in their country’s league, increasing the number of clubs qualified via the Champions League from 4 to 5.
– Two seats The last two are for the countries whose clubs recorded the best collective results in the previous season (2025-2026), so the total number of points collected is divided by the number of participating clubs, which are the two leagues.
The tournament is held in a single league system for 36 participating teams, and the progress of these teams in the tournament is determined accordingly, as the teams are divided into 4 classifications, and a draw selects two teams from each classification to play together.
With this system, each team plays against 8 different clubs, 4 home matches and 4 away matches, as no team will play the same opponent twice in this league.
At the end of the league, the results are tallied and the first to eighth places go directly to the second round of the Champions League.
The 9th to 24th places will compete in a home-and-home system, and 8 teams participating in the second round will be eliminated along with 8 direct qualifying games.
As for the remaining teams from 24 to 36, they will be permanently eliminated from the tournament, as none of them will be transferred to the Europa League.
The tournament will then take place from the 16th round onwards as usual (qualifiers, home and away) as per the normal system.
