Arteta’s strong message to Arsenal management after Champions League defeat

The Gunners manager sets his priorities in the summer Mercato

Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal’s owners to show “ambition” in the upcoming summer transfer window after finishing the season by winning the Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final.

Arsenal lost the continental title to Paris Saint-Germain 4-3 on penalties yesterday after a 1-1 draw and two extra periods.

The Mirror newspaper reported that Arteta has put Aston Villa star Morgan Rodgers among his priorities for the next Mercato.

The Gunners boss sent a clear message to Arsenal’s management following their Champions League final defeat by Paris Saint-Germain, saying the team must make “important decisions” to show “ambition” to take the club to “another level” after winning the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years.

Rodgers is also attracting interest from clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain amid the belief that Villa could sell the player to help balance the books.

It remains unclear whether Aston Villa will sell the player, but Rodgers is admired by Arsenal as he can play as a number 10 as well as on the left wing, a key area Arteta wants to strengthen.

Arteta prefers versatile players and wants more attacking threat and quality with a possible rebuild this summer.

Arsenal spent £250m on huge signings last summer, including Victor Goukeris, Eberechi Eze, Martin Zobimendi, Noni Madueke and Christian Norgaard, and will complete a permanent deal for Piero Hincapie.

In return, Arsenal will have to sell a few players to bring in new faces with the possibility of Gabriel Martinelli’s departure. There is also interest in Gabriel Jesus, although the Brazilian star is in no rush to leave and has a year left on his contract.

The Mirror concluded: “Strengthening the attack is again the focus of attention at Arsenal this summer, but that would require a player to leave to allow for another No. 9 striker… This could also indicate that he also wants a change of style.”
