Spain team doctor Oscar Luis Celada spoke about the trio’s recovery updates Lamin Yamal Neko Williams and Mikel Merino before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
In a statement published by Mundo Deportivo newspaper, Celada said the Matador trio will arrive for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde while they are nursing injuries.
He added: “The intensity of matches in various leagues has resulted in some players arriving physically affected.”
He explained that the medical staff is optimistic about the possibility of Yamal, Merino and Williams’ gradual recovery so that they will be ready to take part in the group stage matches, where Spain will also face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Celada noted that the rest periods between games in the group stage have become 5 days, which helps recovery from injuries and muscle fatigue.
He explained that the medical staff of the Spanish Federation conducted a comprehensive study of the condition of 26 players, paying special attention to the injured, and the results were presented to the technical staff.
