The first single I bought
Ally’s Tartan Army, the song for the 1978 Scottish World Cup, because England did not qualify. I loved the Scottish team – Alan Rough, Martin Buchan, Gordon McQueen, Kenny Dalglish – and 10-year-old me was swept up in World Cup fever.
The first song I liked
When I was 17 years old, I fell in love with a girl named Mary, who was Smith’s favorite. I bought a Hatful of Hollow to please William, It was for nothing. I don’t think he likes me as much as he likes Mr. Smith.
The song I make at karaoke
I was celebrating my 29th birthday in Japan doing a commercial for OK Computer. The CEO of Toshiba EMI, Mr. Inagawa took us to a karaoke bar. At 1am we were wearing artificial animal heads, and Mr Inagawa was in tears as Thom sang My Way. I like karaoke when people are really drunk, they’re like: “I love you, let’s do Copacabana for the third time.”
I know every word of this song
Fastlove by George Michael, my favorite pop star. And, moly moly, his voice, which might sound odd from someone else Radiohead.
The perfect song to play at a party
I was at a Halloween party in LA, I was cold and scared, when the DJ played Daft Punk Playing at My House with LCD Soundsystem, and I thought: “Hell hell, we’re going.”
The best song to have sex with
It’s music or sex for me. I like to hear about nature: the river, the wind, each other.
I can’t listen to that song anymore
I don’t listen to indie music anymore. I am satisfied with it. I’m done with the guitar tracks on the way. I’m glad I don’t have to listen How are you? and Radiohead again.
A song I secretly love, but tell everyone I hate it
I’ll be with my friends, I’ll listen to music, and I’ll stop because I’ve started to analyze it. I heard The Captain of Her Heart by Double recently, which I probably would have dismissed as suspicious, but now think: “This is a great song.”
The song that changed my life
Walking on the Moon with the Police made me want to pick up a guitar. Andy Summers’ guitar sound sounds like it was recorded on the moon.
The song that wakes me up in the morning
Bach’s Mass in B minor.
A song that makes me cry
My new song Blue Morpho. When the children were young, we lived in Brazil on a farm at the edge of the rainforest. It’s amazing how music can capture emotions. Every time I think about their childhood, I start to cry.
The song I would like to be played at my funeral
I sang in Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in the choir as a child. The final movement, In Paradisum, is one of the most beautiful, seemingly simple pieces of music. So I’ll have it, please.
Blue Morpho is out now. Ed O’Brien plays in October.
