Eric Cole shot a course-best third-round 63 featuring eight birdies to move atop the leaderboard with one round to go in the Charles Schwab Challenge.
The American moved up 24 places after finishing at 12-under on the day, giving him a real shot at his first PGA Tour win in 120 starts.
Cole, however, is hot on his heels after Ryan Gerrard fired a 68, leaving him one shot off the lead, while England’s Jordan Smith – who led after two rounds – dropped five strokes off the top after a pedestrian 74 that included five bogeys.
“It was a great day,” Cole said after his round. “Everything was working well – I had a really good start.
“I saw, I knew it was going to be a tougher course, tighter conditions. It was great to get to that start and realize how tough the course was today.
“Then, yeah, just keep trying to hit one good shot after another and make birdies when you can.
“It’s not going to be an easy day tomorrow, I know from experience.
“I know it’s going to be tough, but that’s why I train really hard and that’s why I try and do everything the way I do so I can be ready for whatever tomorrow brings.”
JJ Spaun and Mac Meisner are still in contention heading into the final round at 10-under, even with the former making three bogeys in his third-round 68.
Alex Smalley, Hideki Matsuyama and Russell Henley are three strokes off the lead and tied for fifth, with Matsuyama – the only non-American in the top five – making a birdie and a bogey in his 300th tour start.
European Ryder Cup star Ludwig Aberg finished five strokes off the lead after a 69 with four birdies and three bogeys to round out the rest of the field.
