Giro d’Italia: Jonas Wingard on the brink of victory after 20 stage victories

Overall leader Jonas Wingegaard launched an attack on the tough final climb to take victory in Saturday’s stage 20 of the Giro d’Italia.

It ensures the 29-year-old from Denmark will win the race as long as he safely finishes Sunday’s final stage in Rome and become just the eighth man to complete the triple crown of road cycling’s three-week showpiece.

The two-time Tour de France winner, who also won last year’s Vuelta a España, is making his first appearance at the Giro.

He started the final stage, covering 200km from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo, four minutes and three seconds ahead of Austrian Felix Gall, who was second in the general classification.

Before Vingegaard launched his attack in the final 10km, the two Visma-Lijs one bike team-mates were happy to ride safely in the peloton for the first two-thirds of the stage.

Gaul tried to chase him down during the attack, but the Dane went over a minute into the final 5km to secure a sensational solo victory, completing the podium with local favorite Giulio Ciccone, one minute 15 seconds ahead of second-placed Gaul.
