Canada v Republic of Ireland: Josh O’Dwyer, 16, added to Irish squad for friendly with World Cup co-hosts

Shamrock Rovers teenager Josh O’Dwyer has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their friendly against Canada in Montreal.

The 16-year-old joins club-mate Matt Healy and St Patrick’s Athletics’ Kian Leavy in receiving a first call-up to the senior team.

O’Dwyer, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-15 and under-17 level and will join Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg for an undisclosed fee in July, has been invited to join Heimir Hallgrimson’s squad as a “training player”.

“O’Dwyer will gain valuable experience with the senior squad in Montreal before joining the Ireland Under-17s in their international window next week,” the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said.

The Irish squad has been bolstered by the arrivals of goalkeeper Mark Travers and midfielders Conor Coventry and Dawson Davey, who were all named in the traveling squad to play Canada in Thursday’s 1-0 win over Qatar in Dublin.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Dara O’Shea, Jason Molumby and Jack Moylan, who were sent off at the Aviva Stadium, have all returned to their respective clubs, as part of plans to carry out pre-formed squads for the double-header.

Kick-off for the Canada game at the Stade Saputo is at 00:30 BST on Saturday, 6 June.
