Sudan’s medical team says RSF fighters have killed 27 | Sudan War News

The threats come as an estimated 19.5 million Sudanese are facing severe hunger amid the country’s deepening economic crisis.

The military is associated with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 27 people, including the elderly, in an attack on villages west of Bara in Sudan’s North Kordofan state, according to the Sudan Doctors Network.

Cairo’s medical watchdog said the attack took place on Thursday in the al-Murrah neighborhood, describing it as “a new crime against unarmed civilians in a demilitarized zone”.

Sudan has been in the grip of a civil war since April 2023, when a long-running conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted into a major conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions.

The Kordofan region has become one of the battlegrounds, with clashes escalating in several areas, including drone attacks.

The RSF and allied forces control a large part of western Darfur, as well as parts of Kordofan on the border with South Sudan, areas with oil fields and gold mines. The army has repeatedly clashed with the army over the town of Bara.

Thursday’s attack took place on the second day of Eid al-Adha.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Sudan Doctors Network said that “targeting villages and civilian areas and killing civilians in such a brutal way is a violation of international humanitarian law and all beliefs that prohibit attacks on civilians, especially amid the hardships people are facing as a result of the ongoing war”.

The group added that “ongoing attacks on civilians and safe communities” are increasing the humanitarian crisis and forcing many families to move, suffer and lose their lives.

The attack comes as more than 40 percent of Sudan’s population faces severe hunger, according to a report released Thursday by the United Nations-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

The report says around 19.5 million people across the country are facing severe food insecurity as the conflict creates what aid agencies describe as one of the world’s worst crises.

The Sudan Doctors Network also called on “international organizations and human rights and humanitarian organizations to condemn these violations and take urgent measures to protect civilians and prevent repeated attacks on residential areas by pressuring the leaders of the RSF to stop violations against civilians”.
