In my frugal youth, I once had a summer job as a waitress Shoney on. It’s a situation I don’t recommend. But it taught me two valuable things: 1) How not to drown in my shame as I march around the dining room with my fellow servers and sing a birthday song that begins, “Happy, happy birthday, we’re glad you came”; and 2) That when the chefs at the chicken lines run out of fried chicken, they shout “86 fried chicken!” through certification.
To “86” something, in restaurant slang, is to say it’s out, done, gone, not on the menu anymore. This is where I have heard this word used throughout my life.
But according to Wikipedia, which they naturally have a vocal heritageThere are two other meanings. “86” can also be used for people a restaurant refuses to serve, and some slang dictionaries say it can mean murder.
Which brings us to former FBI director James Comey’s Instagram, and a picture of a sea shell.

Trump, our 47th President, has long held a grudge against Comey, dating back to the Comey investigation into Trump’s possible ties to Russia. Trump famously fired Comey in 2017-and, for good measure, he chased his prosecuting son in 2025.
