Wigan raised some eyebrows when they named a squad with 10 changes, including several debutants, for their most recent Super League match against Hull KR.
The RFL said the squad selection did not breach their operational rules but the match ended in a 62-4 drubbing by KR.
The decision to rest several key players on Saturday should pay off but could be seen as a tactical masterclass.
However, boss Matt Peat knows there is an extra level of expectation on his side as they have won it a record 21 times in the competition.
Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Pete said: “I just don’t know any different. When I was growing up in the city I expected Wigan to win.”
“I’m now in a privileged position where I can lead the team and I still have high expectations, so I can’t imagine coaching at a club that didn’t have that. I’m very lucky to be at a club where expectations are high.”

The semi-final came on the heels of a sensational comeback win over Wigan by St Helens on Good Friday – a match in which short-term Hull KR loanee Bill Leyland scored a decisive brace late on to secure them a massive two points.
After this month’s semi-final, when Wigan beat Saints 32-0, Peat said in his post-match interview that his opponents had “lost their identity”.
In the build-up to Saturday’s final, Pitt said his team had a “duty” to their fans.
“We work very hard. These guys have committed a lot of their lives and made a lot of sacrifices along the way,” he added.
“We have a duty to our supporters but also a duty to the players to enjoy this week and make sure they get the right performance.”
