Violent protests have erupted outside Delaney Hall prison in the US Objections

Protesters return to Delaney Hall immigration detention center in the United States, a facility that has become one of the President’s most important projects Donald Trump‘s kicking a lot of people out.

The site, located outside of Newark, New Jersey, has long been the subject of controversy.

Reopened in February 2025 after a long closure, Delaney Hall is part of a network of immigration detention facilities designed to house the thousands that Trump plans to deport during his second term.

Local officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, have confirmed that the site was redeveloped without proper permits and approvals. Protesters have also criticized the conditions inside the facility, citing human rights violations.

The latest protests have taken place this month in response to reports of inmates on hunger strike inside Delaney Hall.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said health officials seeking to oversee the facility had been denied adequate access.

“As I have said time and time again, the denial of reasonable access raises serious questions about what ICE is trying to hide from the public,” said New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill. words Thursday.

Elected last year, the Democratic governor helped call for the facility to be closed.

On Wednesday night, protesters clashed with police as they tried to block access to Delaney Hall.

Demonstrators, some wearing gas masks, put up barricades and linked arms to form a human chain.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, six protesters were arrested for assaulting government officials overnight.

“Assaulting and obstructing ICE enforcement is a felony and a felony,” the department said. “Anyone who breaks the law will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.”

But some critics question the charges the Trump administration brought against Delaney Hall’s accusers. A year ago, in May 2025, Mayor Baraka was arrested during protests for breaking the law.

Trump’s administration quickly dropped the charges, but charged a then-U.S. Congresswoman, LaMonica McIver, with assault. He has dismissed the charges as “purely political”.

Democratic lawmakers like McIver have come to Delaney Hall to do their job of overseeing the facility.

On Wednesday night, three US representatives – Jerry Nadler, Daniel Goldman and Adriano Espaillat – visited the site. They described dangerous situations, including drug abuse and spoiled food.

Representative Frank Pallone, who visited the site, said he saw the same thing.

“I saw it with my own eyes: moldy food.” People who need urgent medical care who cannot see a doctor for a week or do not receive medicine,” he said in social media.

But the Trump administration has faced accusations that it tried to cover it up the poor in detention centers across the country.

Earlier this week, for example, Governor Sherrill says she was denied access when she tried to enter Delaney Hall for an inspection. Members of Congress said they were also turned away at other places, in defiance of their oversight role.

A report from CNN found that 50 immigrants nationwide have died in custody during Trump’s second term in office, the most in at least two decades.

Delaney Hall is currently managed by a general contractor, GEO Group, as part of a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (HE).
