The United States and Iran have reached an initial memorandum of understanding (MOU) that increase the time to end the war between the two countries for 60 days and begin negotiations to end the war, according to officials.
US sources told Al Jazeera on Thursday that the plan still needs final approval from President Donald Trump. If completed, the deal would be the most successful of several weeks of stalled negotiations.

But the details of the trial agreement remain unclear. It is also unclear whether the 60-day extension represents the deadline for the negotiations. This ongoing contract has already ended.
The deal comes after recent tensions between the US and Iran in the Gulf threatened to derail the deal. Two sides sold less equipment earlier on Thursday.
Axios first reported the deal on Thursday. The White House confirmed the report to Al Jazeera.
According to Axios, the agreement states that the movement of ships will be “unrestricted” in the Strait of Hormuz, and that the US will lift its blockade of Iranian ports.
Tehran has long claimed sovereignty over the waterway, saying the river should be controlled by Iran and Oman because it runs through the two countries’ territories.
But the US has rejected any form of Iranian sovereignty, including a payment system, in the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier on Thursday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent too threatened Oman – a close ally of Washington – and sanctions if it helps the imposition of fines on ships passing through the strait.
Bessent later refused to confirm the details of the allegations, and said there could be no deal that does not comply with Trump’s red lines.
“It’s always a mistake to go ahead of the president, so it’s all going to be the president’s decision,” Besent told reporters.
He said Trump would make his three demands on Iran clear: reopen Hormuz, give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and end its nuclear program.
Tasnim, the Iranian news agency, cited a source close to the talks as rejecting US officials’ criticism of the imminent deal.
“If the text is finalized, Iran will announce the matter to the Pakistani mediator and to the public.” And until then, any news from the West about the end of the issue is not clear,” he said.
In addition to the agreement on the waterway, the said memorandum also requires Iran to commit to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
But Tehran has already made this commitment publicly several times. Senior Leader Killed Ali Khameneiwho was killed by the US and Israel on the first day of the war, February 28, had issued a religious order banning weapons of mass destruction.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Thursday that his country is “not looking for nuclear weapons”.
“We do not participate in discussions in a shameful manner,” he was quoted as saying by Iran’s ISNA news agency.
Although the proposed agreement can solve the problem of Hormuz, other pressing issues, including the continuation of US sanctions and the future of uranium in Iran, must be addressed in other negotiations.
Iran insists it has the right to enrich uranium at home, which is not prohibited under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). But Trump has insisted that the country’s entire nuclear weapons program must be scrapped.
The US is also seeking limits on Iran’s weapons and drone production, but Tehran has blocked talks on its security issues.
Another issue is the terrible war in Lebanon, where Israel is involved he added to his attackkilling dozens of people in recent weeks and ordering the evacuation of two major cities in the south of the country.
The Iran-allied group Hezbollah has also increased its drone strikes against Israeli forces.
Israel bombed Beirut on Thursday for the first time in three weeks – the second attack on the Lebanese capital since a “ceasefire” was reached in April.
Iran has previously said that any deal must include Lebanon.
Separately, the Lebanese government has been negotiating directly with Israel to end the war. The US has previously said that Lebanon was not part of the April deal while separately supporting and hosting Lebanon-Israel talks.
