Meta has announced a new update upcoming subscriptions for InstagramFacebook, and WhatsApp this week. Instagram is not going behind a paywall, no. Instead, users will be able to pay $4 a month for extra features, such as seeing who has re-viewed your story or adding more posts to the top of your profile. Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus ($4 per month), and WhatsApp Plus ($3 per month) will roll out globally this summer.
This “Plus” plan is a Meta test, led by the CEO Mark Zuckerbergdistinguishing how it makes money from its users. Meta is also doing what Meta does best with this move: leveraging the success of other websites — specifically, Snapchat.
“Lovely husband, father of four boys, VP Product @ Meta” reads the tongue of Evan Spiegel LinkedIn profile. Spiegelcofounder and CEO of Snap, has never worked at Meta, although his social network has directly inspired some of the features available on Instagram. When Instagram launched Stories in 2016, CEO Kevin Systrom didn’t talk about how his platform sometimes compares to Snapchat, says TechCrunch that he “deserves all the credit” for the quality of the Story.
In 2017, Snap introduced a “Map” tool where users could log in and see where all their friends were from when they last opened the app. Instagram launched a very similar to the “Map” interface last year, where users could track where friends chose to share their GPS data.
And when IG is launched recently “Instants” program.with its unedited, unfiltered images, it’s very similar to what was once popular BeReal More than anything, missing photos are Snapchat’s biggest strategy.
“As we shared earlier this year, we are testing and adding new subscriptions that offer deeper and more advanced ways to use our software and AI glasses,” said Maria Cubeta, Meta spokeswoman, via email. “Currently, we have been testing subscriptions to increase the way people talk and interact with Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, such as profile updates, news alerts, and the way they respond.” He says this is just the beginning of the larger “Meta One” subscription umbrella, which will eventually include a range of different, cost-effective solutions for businesses and developers as well as end-users who want the added benefits of Meta AI.
At launch, Instagram Plus will have additional features, from additional pins on your profile and special bio fonts to creating a static audience on your Stories posts with “Super Heart” buttons. Facebook Plus allows you to control and customize your experience with News posts, such as review notifications. WhatsApp Plus will include more chats, custom views, and basic stickers.
This subscription plan is just a self-replicating profile. Snapchat dropped the $4 per month plan, called Snapchat+, back in 2022. It gave users access to special features in the app and added it over the years, adding more options and AI tools. In February, Snapchat he announced that this subscription style has helped the company achieve “$1 billion in annual revenue” in direct payments with more than 25 million subscribers worldwide. (Despite being an inspired look, all is not well at Snapchat, as the company. they struggle to make a profit.)
So, even as far as the Plus conference naming, Meta seems to have been heavily inspired by Snapchat again. I would expect nothing less from a company that made a name for itself during the the movement of the metaverse. Following trends is Meta’s modus operandi. Watch what Snapchat does next to see what Meta can do in a few years.
