He said: “We probably won’t have as many storms as in previous years. “We see things outside all the time, especially with hurricanes. So I believe Floridians, we have to prepare.”

The NWS’s outlook was for all weather events and did not include predictions of when or where the storm would make landfall, as is the case with short-term weather conditions, said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which oversees the National Weather Service. NOAA says there is a 55 percent chance of mild weather, a 35 percent chance of near-term weather, and a 10 percent chance of above-average weather.
Hurricane forecasters at Colorado State University similarly predicted mild weather, with 13 named storms, including six hurricanes and two major hurricanes. Forecasters said the western Atlantic was warmer than normal but the eastern and eastern Atlantic were slightly cooler than normal. They said that the warm Atlantic also creates lower atmospheric pressure and stagnant air, which can boost storm activity.
Colorado State forecasters said that the probability of a hurricane landfall is 32 percent on the US coast, 15 percent on the US East Coast including the Florida peninsula, and 20 percent on the Gulf Coast from the Florida panhandle to Brownsville, Texas.
Alessi said that although no hurricanes hit the US last year, Hurricane Melissa destroyed Jamaica as a 5th hurricane. Melissa caused about $9 billion in damage and killed 95 people in the Caribbean.
“Just because the weather is below-average does not mean that a very strong hurricane will not make landfall in the United States,” he said.
