The IRGC said it had targeted a site being used by US forces after the US airstrikes on a site near Bandar Abbas.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck a base used by the United States military in response to US demands in Iran’s territory near the Strait of Hormuz, as the cease-fire and talks to end the war continue.

“Following this morning’s attacks by US forces attacking the area outside the Bandar Abbas airport using projectiles in the air, the American Air base that was the source of the attack was targeted at 4:50 am (0120 GMT),” the IRGC said on Thursday, according to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB.

The IRGC did not provide details on the location of the base, although the Kuwaiti military said its air defenses were responding to “the enemy” on Thursday.

The IRGC said it targeted the base in response to what it said was a US airstrike this morning near Bandar Abbas airport, the Tasnim news agency reported.

An unnamed US government official told Reuters news agency that the US military intercepted four Iranian jets that had bombed the plane and hit a base station in the port city of Bandar Abbas that was about to shoot down the fifth plane.

“The action was measured, defensive and aimed at breaking the ceasefire,” said the official, who asked not to be named, on Thursday.

Reporting from Iran’s capital in Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar said that despite the recent protests, “Neither the US nor Iran are saying that the ceasefire has collapsed.

“This is the third time that a non-combat declaration has been made to directly engage in hostilities,” he said.

Strait is ‘international water’

At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that his administration is making progress in talks to end the war, but denied reports that they were close to a deal with Tehran.

He denied a report on Iran’s state TV that it had found an unofficial document of an agreement to restore commercial shipments through the route to the war before a month, Iran and Oman jointly monitor the traffic.

Mr. Trump said that no single country can have control over the waterway, and it appears to threaten Oman, a country with which the US has a long-standing military and economic relationship.

“No one is going to control (the crisis),” Trump said. “It’s international water and Oman has to act like everyone else or we’ll blow them up. They’ll understand that, it’ll be fine.”

Trump added that he was not yet satisfied with what he would do with Iran, and the US had not discussed easing sanctions on the country.

Oil prices, which fell more than 5 percent on Wednesday, rose again after reports of rising violence. U.S. futures gained more than 3 percent, while stocks fell and the dollar rose.

Trump in ‘very difficult place’

Ebrahim Azizi, the head of Iran’s national security committee, said that Trump’s “speech” would not force Iran to give up its uranium enrichment ambitions, maintain control over the strait and see sanctions lifted.

“It is clear that Trump, looking for a solution to this problem, alternates between issuing threats and asking for cooperation,” said Azizi on Wednesday in a post on X.

An Iranian state television report of the deal said the US would also lift the blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw troops from Iranian territory.

Doug Bandow, director of the Cato Institute, says that the biggest war between the US and Iran is now on the economic front, with the current duel in the Strait of Hormuz.

“Trump is in a very difficult position. He has inadvertently given Iran a very powerful weapon by closing the Strait of Hormuz, and he does not want to risk US ships trying to open it,” Bandow told Al Jazeera.

“It will be difficult for them not to make a deal that will satisfy Iran,” he said.
