Tuchel’s biggest mistake? Wharton shines despite England’s elimination

There was some surprise when England boss Tuchel decided to leave Wharton out of his 26-man squad for the World Cup.

Palace haven’t had a great domestic season, finishing 15th in the Premier League and going out of the FA Cup against non-league Macclesfield – but they’ve now won a European trophy and Wharton has been hugely influential in that.

This conference league finals performance was another reason to wonder why Wharton isn’t on the plane.

Henderson has certainly been picked for his experience but if you compare not only their performances this season, but also last term, Warton probably have more to offer on the pitch.

“I understand why the manager took Henderson but for me if he’s going to do something like this, take him as a coach,” Hoddle said. “Consider him a player-coach if you will, but I think there was a place for Wharton.”

Mainu, frozen out at Old Trafford by Ruben Amorim in the first half of the season, was not involved under Tuchel until the March friendly and has now won for his side.

Both were at Euro 2024 but Wharton never took the field while Mainu started four knockout games, including the final.

ArsenalIts Declan Rice is sure to be one of the first names on the team-sheet and Elliott Anderson is expected to partner him while Tuchel has Bellingham, EJ and Rodgers as midfield options.

Leaving someone like Wharton at home certainly feels like a very tough decision, even if Tuchel has plenty of options at the position.
