The new law aims to involve banks in Russia’s air security through the use of computerized systems and trained staff.

Russian lawmakers have passed a law allowing trained bankers to shoot down Ukrainian drones as threats mount.

The law, which sees banks in Russia install computerized recording systems where designated personnel screen incoming flights, passed the third and final stage in the lower house of the Duma on Tuesday, according to the TASS news agency.

In the midst of a war caused by a large-scale attack by Russia, Ukraine has recently found success as it launches waves of drones to attack Russian facilities, especially those targeting the most important energy companies in Moscow.

The law says the law is needed to protect the offices of the Bank of Russia, including those in the new Russian Federation – referring to the four regions of eastern Ukraine that Moscow has declared annexed although it does not fully control them – amid an increase in terrorist and terrorist attacks.

Under the scheme, banks will finance the installation of these devices at their premises. With banks in almost every town, their inclusion in Russia’s air defense system would help expand its cover.

According to the Interfax news agency, the bill was first proposed last August and later expanded. It still needs to be approved by the Upper House Federation Council and signed by President Vladimir Putin before it can take effect.

Drone security combat

Russia is scrambling to protect its main base from a growing threat from Ukraine’s growing number of drones.

As the frequency and depth of threats to Ukraine increase, Russian officials have urged businesses to help protect them.

Banks are not known to be the biggest bidders, but the plan includes Russia’s central bank and other high-profile institutions, including the state-owned Sberbank.

With little information included in the bill, it has raised questions about how the project will work. Installing the equipment and training the staff on how to use it can take a lot of effort.

The plan also deviates from Putin’s attempts to protect Russians from feeling the effects of the February 2022 attack on their daily lives.

The bill says that bank employees can jam or disable drone control signals, and damage or destroy stationary, underwater and ground vehicles that threaten their facilities, without waiting for a response from security.

“Jamming will be used to make it difficult for (drones) to target and attack targets,” Anatoly Aksakov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Financial Markets, told Russian news agency RBK. “In addition, we will also use the methods of shooting these drones, in order to protect what we have to do.”

Each organization will select employees who can be trained to use the methods.
