In the biggest French Open upset to date, world number two Elena Rybakina suffered a surprise second-round loss to world number 55 Yulia Starodubseva.
Despite winning the opening set, Starodubseva staged a stunning comeback to win 3-6 6-1 7-6 (10-4), while Rybakina looked far from her clinical best.
Rybakina, the Australian Open champion known for her big serves and accurate hitting, committed 71 unforced errors and landed just 53 percent of her first serves.
Kazakhstan’s Rybakina has failed to reach the third round at Roland Garros for the first time since 2020.
Rybakina’s early exit means Aryna Sabalenka will retain her world number one ranking regardless of her performance at Roland Garros.
