Morocco national team coach Mohamed Webe announced his final 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup finals at an official ceremony on Tuesday evening, 16 days before the competition kicks off.
A mix of experience and youth
Webb, 51, retained the backbone that led the national team to historic achievements as the squad included veteran goalkeeper Yassin Bunu, who will be making his third World Cup appearance, as well as captain Achraf Hakim, the PSG star who faces a crucial day in the Champions League final against Arsenal this weekend.
He also retained the services of midfielder Sofia Amrabat, who will also be making his third World Cup appearance, and Marseille’s Nayef Akrad despite concerns over his fitness, in addition to Manchester United full-back Nasir Mazraoui.
Rising talent invades the roster
The most obvious surprise in the positive list was the choice of 19-year-old French midfielder Ayoub Bouadi of Lille.
The young talent, who announced his choice to represent the Atlas Lions a few weeks ago, has a golden opportunity to play in his first World Cup alongside his new generation colleagues Issa Diop and Neil El Ainaoui, who featured strongly in the last Africa Cup of Nations match.
The severe absence of buffalo
On the other hand, Sofiane Boufal’s exclusion was the biggest shock as the player who was called up to the pre-camp came back to the forefront of discussion on Morocco’s sports street after a long absence from the national team following the recent Africa Cup of Nations finals.
A versatile offensive line
Webb relied on an integrated attacking line-up that included Ibrahim Diaz, Real Madrid’s rising star, Ayoub El Kaabi, Olympiacos striker Abdel Samad El Zalzouli and Sofiane Raheem, in addition to promising names such as Ayoubi Amimony and Shamsdin Talebi.
Final readiness
The national team underwent a closed training camp with 29 players from 22 May, which included a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burundi, which ended in a resounding 5–0 victory, before Webe decided on his final options.
The fire brigade is waiting
Morocco will begin their World Cup campaign in Group C by facing Brazil at New York’s MetLife Stadium on June 13, then Scotland at Boston’s Gillette Stadium on June 19, before concluding the group stage against Haiti at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 24.
