Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the European Union have summoned Russian delegations a day after Moscow warned tourists and diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital ahead of time. air strikes again.

On Tuesday, EU Spokesperson Anitta Hipper called Russia’s threat to diplomats and foreign nationals an “unacceptable escalation”.

Hipper added in a post on X that the charges were called for, calling on Moscow to “stop attacking civilians & Russia to engage in real peace talks starting with an indefinite ceasefire”.

In early May, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a three-day ceasefire in Moscow celebrating their victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 at the end of World War II, but fighting quickly resumed with both sides accusing the other of violating the agreement.

On Monday, Moscow said it planned to launch more protests in Kyiv after a series of drone and missile attacks in Ukraine over the weekend that killed four people.

Among the weapons used by Russia in the attack is its Oreshknik hypersonic missile, which can travel 10 times faster than the speed of sound.

The warning came after Russia accused Ukraine of targeting a vocational school last week in the Russian-held Luhansk region that killed 21 people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military on Friday to prepare for retaliatory measures in response to the attack.

“In the meantime, the Russian Armed Forces have begun fighting against the Ukrainian armed forces in Kyiv,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

“The strike will also affect decision-making centers and offices… We are warning foreign nationals, including diplomatic and international staff, to leave the city as soon as possible,” it added.

But in response to the call to leave the country, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office said on Tuesday that Moscow was engaging in “threats, intimidation & escalation”, which is why it had summoned the Russian ambassador.

“We explained to Russia today: We will not be intimidated by threats and will continue to support Ukraine with all our strength,” the ministry wrote on X.

Norway and the Netherlands also recalled their Russian ambassadors in a threat to attack Kyiv.

With no end to the war in sight, the Secretary of State of the United States Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that Washington is ready to act as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine, where negotiations have stalled.
