The curtain fell on Gael Monfils at Roland Garros on Monday night after he lost to compatriot Hugo Gaston (6-2), (6-3), (3-6), (2-6), (0-6) in the first round.
The 39-year-old French international, who will retire at the end of the season, paid tribute at Stade Philippe Chatrier, ending a career that spanned more than two decades in France’s prestigious league.
Tennis legends celebrate the fighter
A video was shown on the court, with the participation of major international tennis stars, led by Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
The Swiss legend said: “Hi Gael, congratulations on your career and all these years at Roland Garros. It was nice to share the locker room and the training grounds with you. Matches against you were always difficult.”
Yannick Noah, the last Frenchman to win the Roland Garros title, praised Monfils’ career and described it as exceptional.
World number one Yannick Siner said he will miss Monfils, especially off the court.
As for Arthur Fells, he thanked his “childhood idol” and the video also featured Carlos Alcaraz, Stan Wawrinka and Emily Mauresmo.
