World Cup 2026: Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies to miss Canada’s tournament opener


Injured captain Alphonso Davies is expected to miss co-hosts Canada’s World Cup opener, but head coach Jesse Marsh believes the full back will still play a role in the tournament.

Davis, 25, suffered a hamstring injury Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final second leg Against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6, the German club said at the time that he was expected to be out for “a few weeks”.

He made just 13 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern, hampered by injuries.

Canada opens its home World Cup campaign against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12 and faces Qatar and Switzerland on June 18 and 24 in Vancouver.

“I think Alfonso will play in the World Cup,” Marsh told reporters in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Canada will train this week before announcing their 26-man World Cup squad on Friday.

“I don’t think he’ll be quite ready on June 12… but we’ll see.”

Davis was among 32 players invited to the camp, but Marsh said the Canada captain would only join the team on the eve of their June 1 friendly against Uzbekistan in Edmonton.

They will face the Republic of Ireland in Montreal on June 5 in a World Cup warm-up match.

Davis last played for Canada against the United States in March of last year. when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

He missed the friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia in March 2026 due to a hamstring strain.

The former Vancouver Whitecaps left-back was part of Canada’s World Cup squad in 2022 and scored 4-1 loss Group stage eventual semi-finalist Croatia.
