Jodie Jones: Notts County winger shines at Wembley after recovering from injury

Jones’ performance marked another chapter in his Wembley saga, which began when he helped Coventry win the EFL Trophy in 2017 and was in the books in 2018 when they won the League Two play-offs.

His previous outing for Notts involved scoring a penalty in the National League campaign final shootout against Chesterfield in 2023.

He followed that up Representing Malta Before being named the 2024 League Two Player of the Year as a substitute against England in November 2023 A record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne with 24 assists.

“I’d like to think there’s another chapter coming up for me at Wembley,” Jones said. “I haven’t lost to any club. I’d like to think Wembley is a good place for me.”

County promotion was their 14th in EFL history, one short of Grimsby Town’s all-time record, and Jones said there was no reason to be optimistic about their future.

“My godfather said to me when I went to Notts, ‘I really believe you can do something like what you did at Coventry and go into the leagues. Notts seem like a club who would do something like that, they’re a massive club’,” Jones said.

“It wasn’t that long ago that I was a Coventry City player and we got promoted against Notts in the play-offs. I hope they forgive me.

“Who knows where we can go. We are a fantastic club and I am sure we will attract a lot of talent who will want to come and join us.”

As it is the third major success between his notable clubs, Jones said it would be “amazing”, as he spoke of fruitful campaigns at Arsenal, Coventry and Notts County in a family group chat earlier in the season.
