Tuner Review – Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman team up sweetly in this disturbing thriller | Video

Leo Woodall’s TV roles in The White Lotus and One Day gave him a megawatt influence, but for his big screen role so far he’s been slow to shine and excel in different ways. Dustin Hoffman as one of New York’s top pianists. And what a pair they are; is a fun to watch simple, effortless drama that mixes romcom moments with a relaxed crime thriller. It’s like the Safdie brothers are in chill out mode.

Woodall plays Niki, a tuner who is hypersensitive and always wears earplugs to block out a world of deafening noise. Niki works for veteran singer Harry Horowitz, played with undeniable warmth by Hoffman. It’s a great piece of work but the funniest joke in the film is that rich customers treat them like dumb men – would you just open up where you are?

When Harry forgets his security combination, Niki realizes that she has a knack for breaking it, thanks to her sensitive hearing. He also meets student musician Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu) repairing a piano at a music store. The way they live together is done well: Ruthie hates having her work interrupted by the piano player’s arrival, and doesn’t accept Niki until she realizes she has a good voice and can recognize every note she plays. The event enters into the consciousness of the class; the script was also written by director Daniel Roher, a documentary producer who won an Oscar for his script for 2022. Navalnyand Tuner is his first film.

It gets a little frustrating when the story starts to evolve. Niki meets Uri (Lior Raz), a young man who runs a home security company and has a problem with stealing from his clients. You can see where Uri is going as soon as he hears Niki’s skills. However, the characters have some surprises even if the plot doesn’t, including Uri, who is not a normal person but a cunning and manipulative man. Some of the best moments are the slow scenes, Niki and Harry in their clapboard car, blowing the wind, down their street.
