Elections reveal the extent of the problem
Real Madrid have entered a new phase of anxiety ahead of the start of next season, but this time far from expected results or deals.
A disturbing sign appeared in the corridors of the club, which did not go unnoticed after the Royals found themselves in front of a completely unfamiliar scene for a team used to controlling the most important positions of European football.
The irony is that the crisis is not about midfield or attack, but a position that has been one of the team’s most obvious strengths for many years, from the days of Brazilian Marcelo to Dani Carvajal’s golden era. Now the picture looks completely different.
According to Spain’s Marca, Real will be represented in all but the full-back position at the next World Cup, in an incident the newspaper described as a “World Cup hole” within the squad.
The biggest shock is that five names linked to Real Madrid will not be present at the World Cup, be it at right or left front, and they are Dani Carvajal, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ferlan Mendy, Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras.
The magazine believes that this collective absence reflects a double crisis within the club, starting with the decline in the technical level of some names and not ending with repeated injuries and the failure of some new projects to impose themselves at the international level.
The report states that Dani Carvajal’s latest injury has fueled talk of the end of an entire generation at right-back, after the player has been one of the most consistent and influential elements at Real Madrid and the Spain national team for years.
Despite the great history of the Spanish defender, who has won 27 titles with the club, his absence from the World Cup was seen as clear evidence that the team still relies on him.
As for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who arrived at Real Madrid with much fanfare, he has yet to shake off the defensive doubts that dogged him in England, keeping him out of his country’s national team squad.
Marca confirmed that Real are still confident in the player’s attacking capabilities, but have begun to realize that the project is taking longer than expected, with the possibility of looking for an additional full-back to support the right front.
On the left front, Ferlan Mendy continued to suffer from muscle injuries that deprived him of continuity, while Fran García failed to convince the technical staff or impose himself on the Spanish team’s score.
The paper also adds to the concern over Alvaro Carreras, after he failed to even make Spain’s preliminary squad despite the club’s continued confidence in his talent and ability to develop in the future.
