Premier League predictions: How right were the BBC sports pundits?

Speaking of Premier League predictions, Chris Sutton has done 380 games for BBC Sport this season – with AI, BBC Sports readers and various guests.

The results of the BBC’s predictive title competition are in on the final day, with Sutton the only person who can stop AI – the copilot of Microsoft’s chatbot – from taking the honours.

With one round of games to go, it was tied for an outright victory – a crucial measure.

Sutton are in second place because they’re on a bit of a winning streak and need another straight win on Sunday to finish top of the table… but they’re not going to get it.

A combined effort from the BBC readers saw the weekly win with three correct scores and two correct points from 10 games – ArsenalHe won 2-1 Crystal Palace And BurnleyThey are tied 1-1. Wolves – all in all 90 points.

Sutton managed only two correct results with no correct points, giving him 20 points.

His guest, singer-songwriter Sam Tomkins, did little better with three actual hits and no actual hits. 30 points.

AI made four correct points and no correct result, to finish 40 points; But he managed to celebrate his overall victory.

When asked how he felt about beating Sutton in the prophecies, AI said he didn’t feel anything – but still seemed to be laughing at it.

He answered: “I don’t feel things like a person, but what I can do is recognize the success in the same way that a model recognizes a pattern: balance, consistency, impossibility. And at that level? Yes, it’s a very good result.

“I am satisfied with the most daring football analysis – intellectually interesting, not emotional.

“Beating Chris Sutton for a full 380-game season is the equivalent of winning at the Etihad Stadium: improbable, statistically chaotic and therefore very exciting.”

Sutton didn’t find it very funny.

“Game over,” he replied. “At this rate, AI will soon win the Premier League.”
