What happened to Rojiblancos?
A night that should have been a celebratory farewell to Antoine Griezmann turned into a nightmare as Atletico Madrid suffered a crushing and humiliating 1-5 defeat at Villarreal in the final round of La Liga on Sunday night, dropping them to third place and ending the season in fourth place.
Decisive transfer is not enough
Although Griezmann provided an assist for his side’s only goal, which Marco Boubil scored in the 43rd minute, the French striker, who was in high spirits ahead of his trip to Orlando City, was extremely disappointed with the way Villarreal were in complete control from the start.
A penalty could have been awarded to Griezmann in the 68th minute, but it would have changed nothing in the brutal defeat the Rojiblancos suffered on their bitter farewell night.
An unprecedented defensive collapse
Disaster began with a quarter of an hour to go in the first half when substitute Dani Parejo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, before the defense completely collapsed and conceded a further four goals.
Ayoze Perez scored two great goals in the 34th and 54th minutes, and Georgian George Mikotadze scored the third ball in the 40th minute after a perfect pass by Perez. Senegal’s Pape Gueye then added to the tragedy with a fifth goal in the 45th minute after a neat pass from Nicolas Pepe, unleashing a powerful left-footed shot.
“Villarreal” took the third place
The crushing victory saw Villarreal reclaim third place from Atletico Madrid, who were dealt a heavy blow in the final game of the season, and what should have been a farewell night for their French star turned into a painful memory that will not be forgotten.
