F1 Canadian Grand Prix results: Kimi Antonelli wins as George Russell retires

George Russell suffered a major blow to his title hopes when he retired in the lead at the Canadian Grand Prix, beating teammate Kimi Antonelli.

The two Mercedes drivers battled for the lead several times and were still nose to tail when Russell’s car came to an abrupt halt on lap 30.

Antonelli’s fourth consecutive win, combined with Russell’s retirement due to what Mercedes said appeared to be a power-unit problem, leaves the Italian 43 points clear in the championship – seven points adrift of two clear victories.

Russell’s retirement was not only a bitter blow for the Briton, but it also spoiled the race between the two Mercedes drivers, the second in two days after a dispute in Saturday’s sprint.

For the second day in a row, Antonelli complained about Russell’s driving, accusing him of pushing him off the track.

And just before the end of the rally, both drivers were warned to make the race “good” or they would be told to take their place.

Before that, there were a lot of disappointing moves and Antonelli Russell seemed to have a quick advantage when he retired.
