Juma Faye thanks King of Morocco after decision to pardon fans
Senegal’s president, Bachir Joma Faye, wanted to welcome back fans from Morocco after they were detained for a long time over riots at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final last January.
Yesterday evening, Saturday, the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, granted a royal pardon to a number of Senegalese fans who had been sentenced in court on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.
In turn, S. Senegal’s football federation thanked the king for the pardonconfirming the depth of relations between the two countries.
The President of Senegal was present at the Blaise Diagene International Airport to check the arrival of the fans in the country after a long period of tension and anxiety.
The President of Senegal said in his speech. “This day is a very important moment for us. I would like to thank the Moroccan authorities, and particularly His Majesty the King, for the pardon on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.”
The President of Senegal issued a statement last night in which he thanked the King of Morocco, saying on his account on X: “Our nationals who were arrested in Morocco in connection with the events of the Africa Cup of Nations are now free and will soon return to their families thanks to the royal pardon granted by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”
“I express my sincere thanks and gratitude to His Majesty the King for this decision, which carries the values of tolerance and humanity. Senegal and Morocco share a historic brotherhood and long-standing relationship, and this position once again embodies those ties.”
