Harry Kane breaks the record that has stood for 98 years

to become Harry KaneThe Bayern Munich striker is only the second English player in the history of Europe’s five major leagues to score 60 or more goals in a season after he led Bayern Munich to the German Cup at Stuttgart’s expense.

The England captain scored a hat-trick as Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 3-0 in the German Cup final on Saturday night, taking his tally at club level to 61 this season.

Dixie Dean was the last English player in the five major leagues to reach the 60-goal barrier when he achieved it for Everton nearly 100 years ago in the 1927-28 season.

Kane’s final goal of the season, a penalty to seal Bayern’s 21st German Cup title, saw him become the most goalscorer by any player in Europe’s five major leagues since Cristiano Ronaldo’s 61 for Real Madrid in 2014-15.

Kane said in his interview after the final. “Before this final game, I felt that my responsibility, like everyone else’s, was to lead the team to the title.”

“I know opportunities will come my way, and that happened again today. So to score a hat-trick in the final is a very special feeling and those will be memories I will never forget.”

It is only the fourth time in history that a player has scored a hat-trick in a German Cup final, with Poland’s Robert Lewandowski the last to achieve the feat when he did it for Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich in 2012.

Notably, Kane has scored six goals in the last two games, after he also scored a hat-trick in Bayern Munich’s last Bundesliga game, which ended with a 5-1 win over Cologne.

This is also the fifth time in the English striker’s career that he has scored a hat-trick in two consecutive matches, and the last time he achieved it was in September 2024.
