Russia has hit Kyiv and surrounding areas with heavy missile and drone strikes, killing four people and injuring more than 60, Ukrainian officials said, as Moscow threatened to retaliate over insurgency in eastern Ukraine controlled by Russia.
The explosion began at 1 a.m. Sunday (22:00 GMT Saturday) after a warning by the Ukrainian military that Russia might launch a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile.

The attack included 600 drones and 90 air-, sea- and surface-to-ground missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Ukraine’s military destroyed and intercepted 549 drones and 55 missiles, and 19 missiles failed to reach targets, the military said.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two people were killed in the capital and 56 were injured. The head of the region around Kyiv said two people were also killed there and nine were injured.

Damage was recorded in 40 places in several districts of the capital, including residential buildings, head of the Kyiv military administration Tymur Tkachenko said in a Telegraph post.
“The capital has been heavily bombed by artillery,” he said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia used the Oreshnik missile, which is difficult to intercept, in the bombing.
