A man has died after a shark attack off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia, police have said.

The man ran ashore after being bitten on Sunday near Kennedy Shoal, a shallow reef about 45km (28 miles) from the coast, a spokesman for the Queensland Police Service said.

The man was met by an ambulance but died shortly after, the spokesman said.

According to local media, the area’s beaches have been closed while police assess the security situation.

The incident is the second fatal shark attack in Australia in less than a week.

On May 16A 38-year-old man died after being bitten by a shark near Perth on the west coast.

Most shark attacks occur along the eastern and south-eastern coasts of Australia with around 20 incidents recorded each year, according to the Institute of Health and Welfare.
