Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard took the overall leader’s pink jersey as he pulled away from the rest of the favorites on the final mountain to win the Giro d’Italia’s mountain stage 14.
The two-time Tour de France winner claimed his third stage win of the 2026 edition with a brilliant late attack on the 133km stage through the mountains to Pila.
His Visma-Liz A bike team led the peloton from the start to the end, up the toughest climb – a 16.6km drag to the finish line – and gradually became a breakaway group.
Wingard’s team-mate David Piganzoli moved him to the front and from there he made his move to secure the pink jersey for the first time.
Overnight leader Afonso Eulalio – who led from stage five – moved into second place overall, nearly two and a half minutes behind.
“Today we had a plan with the team from the start, and we wanted to control the race, and that’s what my teammates did,” Wingard said.
“It was really impressive how they rode, and I’m very proud of my teammates, and I’m proud that I can give back to them – it’s a great win.”
Wingard, racing in the Giro for the first time, is aiming to become just the eighth rider to win three Grand Tours.
He finished second, 49 seconds ahead of Austrian Felix Gall, with Australia’s former winner Joy Hindley third on Saturday.
