Gloucestershire last ball thriller against Glamorgan

Despite an impressive start to life in the County Championship for Glamorgan, they come into the game off the back of a last-ball three-run defeat in their T20 opener at Northampton.

Gloucestershire named an unchanged 11 after bowling out Warwickshire for just 74 runs in Bristol on Friday.

Alex Horton and Harley came in for Dan Douthwaite and Colin Ingram due to injury for the home side.

Glamorgan got off to a slow start in the Cardiff sun, with South African Jensen breaking the stumps to dismiss Will Smale in the first over.

Glamorgan captain Kieron Carlson was also dismissed for a disappointing 18 when he was hit high at mid-on by a Marchant de Lange delivery.

Some sharp bowling from Gloucestershire, with spinner Jack Taylor taking 2-24, left the visitors at 45-5, but Harley hit four sixes en route to his total of 46 to give the home side hope.

With Gloucestershire needing 158 runs to win, Afghanistan international Fazlhaq Farooqi continued a remarkable start to his Glamorgan career as he took two wickets in the first over of the second innings.

Miles Hammond steadied the ship for the visitors with 10 boundaries en route to 56 before being bowled by Ned Leonard.

James Bracey suffered a rare hit-wicket dismissal, kicking the stumps and trying to boot a ball away from Leonard.

Jack Taylor was swinging Gloucestershire’s pace with 34, until he was caught on the boundary by Mason Crane, who finished with 2-16.

The pairing of Dhariwal and Matt Taylor looked the opposite, but Dhariwal hit a six on the first ball of Farooqui’s last over and Taylor’s edge completed the job for the visitors.

Gloucestershire captain Jack Taylor said: “We’re excited to get over the line, it looked like it was getting away from us but after batting really badly two nights in a row we’re going to be two from two.

The club did a great job of identifying him (Jansen) when Liam Scott and David Payne were out in the first half of the tournament.

“You always take anything with short boundaries here (chasing 158). 7 for 3 from 10 balls is never ideal but Hamo had a great knock and we were in a position to win in the end with two wickets down.”

Henry Harley of Glamorgan said: “It was a shame not to get over the line at the end and it’s two games we’ve lost by small margins, but I think good things have come from the first two games.

“You’re never out of a game in T20s and they did well to win, but it was a massive shame for us.

“I used to come and watch them as a kid and it was really special to be there and join the boys. I’m so happy, it’s just a shame we didn’t get to put the icing on the cake.”
