Police confirmed that a family was attacked by robbers at 8.30pm last Thursday, but did not identify the victims.

“Several masked men entered the house. After entering, they threatened the residents and left a family member with minor head injuries. They are still under investigation,” said a statement from the Vaud cantonal police.

“The criminals then forced another family member to open the safe before fleeing,” he added.

He said the value of the stolen items is still being assessed.

A major search operation involving Swiss and French police and border security has been launched, police added.

Prost, 71, drove for McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams during a 13-year F1 career, winning world titles in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993.

Only Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton with seven each and Juan Manuel Fangio with five have won more championships than Prost.
